Amazon Smart Thermostat Blank Screen: 5 Checks, in Amazon’s Order
The Short Answer
Touch the front of the thermostat first. Amazon says the display might dim when inactive, and a touch brings it back. If it stays dark, the thermostat is not getting power, and the cause is nearly always in the wiring or at the furnace, not in the thermostat.
| Check | What you are looking for |
|---|---|
| 1. Touch it, then check brightness | A display that is only dimmed |
| 2. Faceplate and wires | A loose wire or a faceplate that is not clicked on |
| 3. The C wire | A missing or badly connected C wire or adapter |
| 4. Power to the system | Breaker, furnace switch, furnace door |
| 5. Fuses on the furnace board | A blown 3 or 5 amp fuse |
1. Wake It, Then Check the Brightness
If a touch wakes the display, nothing is wrong; it is set to dim. To change that, Amazon’s path in the Alexa app is Devices → Thermostat → your thermostat → Settings → Thermostat configuration → Display brightness, which sets the brightness for both the active and the inactive display.
2. Reseat the Faceplate and Wires
Turn off power to the heating and cooling system at the breaker first. Then, as Amazon describes: pull the faceplate off, compare the wiring with the pictures in the Alexa app, and make sure each wire is pushed in tightly. Put the faceplate back on the wall plate until you hear it click. A faceplate that has not clicked home is enough to leave the screen dark.
3. Check the C Wire
The Amazon Smart Thermostat has no battery; it needs constant power from a C wire. Amazon’s blank-display steps say to check the C-wire connection and that a C-wire adapter can be bought separately if you do not have one. Its install guide adds a useful detail: if your old thermostat ran on batteries and you connected a C wire to the new one, check at the furnace control board that the same wire lands on the terminal labelled “24 V Common”. A C wire connected only at the thermostat end does nothing.

4. Check Power to the System
- Confirm there is no power cut and the circuit breaker is on.
- Check the furnace breaker and that the furnace power switch is on. It often looks like a light switch on or near the furnace.
- Make sure the furnace access panel is firmly closed. Furnaces have a door switch that cuts power when the panel is off or loose.
5. Check the Fuses on the Furnace Board
Amazon’s last power check is for a blown fuse (3 and 5 amp) on the furnace board. Its install guide explains how that happens: the fuse can blow if the power was not turned off first, or if wire tips touched during installation. With the power off, pull the fuse and look at the wire inside; if it is broken or the plastic is darkened, replace it with the same rating.
If a new fuse blows again straight away, stop: there is a short in the thermostat wiring that needs finding. Amazon also suggests checking the furnace itself for an error light or flashing red LED and looking it up in the furnace manual.

Bussmann 3A Blade Fuse (5-pack)
Replacement for the low-voltage fuse on most furnace control boards. Match the amp rating printed on the old fuse.

A display that returns and then goes dark again is losing power during operation. See Delayed Start and C-wire problems and the wider smart thermostat black screen checklist, which also covers condensate float switches. Resetting the thermostat will not fix lost power.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Amazon Smart Thermostat screen blank?
It may only be dimmed; touch the display. If it stays dark it has no power: check the faceplate and wiring, the C wire, the breaker and furnace switch, the furnace door, and the 3 and 5 amp fuses on the furnace board.
Does the Amazon Smart Thermostat have a battery?
No. It needs constant power from a C wire or a C-wire adapter, which is why a blank screen points to wiring or system power.
How do I make my Amazon Smart Thermostat display brighter?
In the Alexa app go to Devices, Thermostat, your thermostat, Settings, Thermostat configuration, Display brightness.
Will resetting my Amazon Smart Thermostat fix a blank screen?
No. A thermostat with no power cannot be reset, and a reset does not restore power. Find the power problem first.
