Most smart thermostat problems fall into three groups, and knowing which one you have saves a lot of time:

• Power. Smart thermostats run on 24 V from your heating and cooling equipment. Blank screens, reboots, “Calibrating”, power error codes and Wi-Fi drops are usually a power problem, not a broken thermostat.
• Protective delays. “Delayed Start”, “Wait” and a flashing “Cool On” are normally a compressor protecting itself for a few minutes. They only matter if they never clear.
• The equipment. If the thermostat clicks and shows it is calling for heat or cooling but nothing runs, the thermostat has done its job; the fault is at the furnace, air handler or outdoor unit.

When to Call a Technician

Call someone if a replacement fuse blows straight away, a breaker trips when you reset it, you smell burning, the furnace keeps tripping its safety switch with a clean filter, or ice on a heat pump never clears. Those need instruments and access to line voltage.
