Thermostat Reading the Wrong Temperature? Placement First, Calibration Second
First: Is It Wrong, or Is It Just Somewhere Else?
A thermostat reports the temperature at one point on one wall. Your handheld thermometer reports it wherever you are standing. Those two numbers disagreeing by a couple of degrees is not a fault — it is two accurate instruments in different places.
Manufacturers are direct about this. Copeland, which makes the Sensi thermostat, states that “in nearly all cases where a digital thermostat is not reading accurately, it is because of a poor thermostat location.”
So the question to answer first is not “how do I calibrate this” but “is this thermostat somewhere that represents the room.” Calibrating a badly placed thermostat just moves the error around.
The Test That Separates Placement From Calibration
Put a thermometer you trust immediately next to the thermostat — taped to the wall beside it, not on a table across the room. Leave both for at least half an hour with the system off, then compare.
- They agree within a degree: the thermostat is reading its own location correctly. Your problem is placement — that spot is not representative of the room. Calibration will not fix this.
- They disagree by more than a degree or two: now you have a genuine reading offset, and the calibration setting is the right tool.
Doing this test first saves you from the usual mistake: dialling in an offset to compensate for a sunny wall, then finding the house is too cold every evening once the sun has moved.
Placement Problems, Ranked by How Often They Are the Cause
- Direct sunlight. Even an hour of afternoon sun on the wall will push a reading several degrees high, and the system will under-heat the house for the rest of the day. If the reading is wrong at a predictable time of day, this is almost always why.
- An exterior wall. The wall itself runs colder than the room in winter and warmer in summer, and the thermostat reads the wall as much as the air.
- Airflow from a supply register. Conditioned air blowing across the thermostat makes it satisfy early, which is the classic cause of short cycling.
- A draught from a door, window or an uninsulated wall cavity. Air moving through the wall behind the thermostat carries outdoor temperature straight to the sensor. The hole the wires come through is a surprisingly effective draught path — sealing it is a genuine fix.
- Heat from something nearby. A lamp, a TV, a router, a kitchen, or the warmth of a hallway that runs hotter than the rooms you actually use.
- The hallway problem. Most thermostats are in a hallway, and hallways are not where anyone sits. The thermostat is faithfully controlling a space nobody occupies.

Using the Calibration Offset Properly
Most smart thermostats expose a temperature offset setting. Sensi’s adjusts the room temperature reading by ±5 °F, and the manufacturer describes it as being for a thermostat sitting “in a slightly warm or cold spot,” or for matching an old thermostat you were used to. Other brands are broadly similar; check yours before assuming a range.
Two things worth knowing before you use it:
- An offset is a constant, and most placement errors are not. A sunny wall is wrong by six degrees at 4pm and correct at midnight. No single offset fixes that; it just relocates the error to a different hour.
- The offset usually applies to the thermostat only, not to remote sensors. Sensi states this explicitly. If you run room sensors, calibrating the thermostat does not calibrate them.
Copeland also notes that if ±5 °F is not enough to reconcile the reading, the problem may be equipment sizing rather than the sensor, and the answer is a load calculation rather than a bigger offset. A thermostat needing more than a few degrees of correction is telling you something.
The Cause Nobody Expects: The Thermostat Warming Itself
A smart thermostat runs a colour screen, Wi-Fi and a processor, and all of that produces heat inside the same housing as the temperature sensor. Manufacturers compensate for it in firmware, but the compensation assumes normal behaviour.
The symptom to watch for: the reading sits a degree or two high, and drifts higher the longer the screen stays lit or the more the device is doing. If your thermostat reads correctly first thing in the morning and creeps upward through the day with no sun involved, self-heating is a reasonable suspect.

A common version of “my thermostat reads wrong” is really “the bedroom is cold while the hallway is fine.” The thermostat is reading its own location accurately; the house is unevenly heated.
Offsetting the thermostat to make the bedroom comfortable will overheat everywhere else and raise the bill. The real answers are remote room sensors, so the thermostat can average or prioritise the room that matters, or fixing the underlying distribution — balancing, duct leakage or insulation.
