The Short Answer
There is no single best smart thermostat, because three things rule most models out before features matter: whether you have a C (common) wire, whether you have a heat pump with electric backup heat, and whether your heat is electric baseboard. Answer those, then pick by smart home and budget:
| Pick | Best if you… | Why | Full guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium Check price › | Want the best all-rounder, or have a heat pump with backup strips | Room sensor in the box; numeric outdoor lockouts for aux heat; Alexa or Siri built in | Heat pump guide |
| Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) Check price › | Use Google Home or Matter, or have no C wire | Learns your schedule; sensor in the box; runs without a C wire in most homes | No C wire guide |
| ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential Check price › | Want ecobee for less | ecobee’s cheapest model; add SmartSensors later | ecobee models compared |
| Honeywell Home X2S Check price › | Have a C wire and a tight budget | ENERGY STAR certified; Apple Home, Google and Alexa through Matter | Under $100 guide |
| Sensi Lite Check price › | Have no C wire and a tight budget | Sensi says most systems do not need a C wire | Under $100 guide |
| Amazon Smart Thermostat Check price › | Run your home on Alexa | Set up and run from the Alexa app | Alexa guide |
| Mysa V2 Check price › | Heat with electric baseboards | A line-voltage thermostat; ecobee and Nest cannot run 120 V or 240 V heaters | Baseboard guide |

Three Questions Before You Buy
- Do you have a C wire? With the power off, take the old thermostat off the wall and look for a wire on a C terminal. Many smart thermostats need one; the Nest Learning (4th gen) and Sensi Lite usually do not, and the ecobee Premium ships with a Power Extender Kit. Details: thermostats that work without a C wire.
- Is it a heat pump with electric backup? If your system has auxiliary or emergency heat strips, the setting that matters most is an outdoor-temperature lockout that keeps the strips off in mild weather. The Bonneville Power Administration’s thermostat support sheets list where each model keeps it. Details: best thermostat for a heat pump.
- Is your heat electric baseboard? Baseboard heaters run on 120 V or 240 V, which low-voltage thermostats cannot switch; Google says the Nest Learning Thermostat is not compatible with high-voltage systems. You need a line-voltage model such as the Mysa V2.
1. ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium: Best Overall
ecobee’s top model comes with a SmartSensor for temperature and occupancy in another room, has Alexa or Siri built in, and tracks indoor air quality. On a heat pump it exposes numeric outdoor-temperature thresholds for both auxiliary heat and the compressor, which is the clearest aux-heat control of any model here. It works with Apple Home, Alexa and Google Assistant, ships with a Power Extender Kit for homes without a C wire, and carries a three-year warranty. List price: $259.99.
Skip it if: you live in Google Home or want the thermostat to learn a schedule by itself; that is the Nest’s strength. Head to head: ecobee vs Nest.

The Nest Learning Thermostat builds its own schedule from the temperatures you set, and the 4th gen comes with a Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) for another room. List price: $279.99; Amazon has been selling it below that this autumn.
Skip it if: you want a voice assistant built into the thermostat or numeric control over aux heat; the ecobee Premium has both.
