The deciding question is room sensors. The Premium includes one SmartSensor; the Enhanced and Essential include none. A SmartSensor 2-pack lists at $99.99, so an Enhanced plus a 2-pack comes to $299.98, against $259.99 for a Premium with one sensor in the box. If you want sensors, the Premium is usually the better buy.

What the Extra $60 Buys
- A room sensor. ecobee’s SmartSensors report temperature and occupancy, so the thermostat can average the rooms you use and favour occupied ones with Follow Me. ecobee’s Room Sensors FAQ covers how they work. Worth it if one room is always too hot or too cold.
- A built-in voice assistant. The Premium has Alexa or Siri in the thermostat itself. If you already have a smart speaker in the room, this matters less.
- Air quality readings. The Premium reports indoor VOCs and an estimated CO2 level. Useful information, but it does not change how the thermostat heats or cools.
- A second aux heat stage. Only relevant if your heat pump’s backup heat has two stages. Check your installer’s wiring labels before paying for it.
Heat Pump Owners: Both Give You the Thresholds
The setting that saves the most money on a heat pump is a limit on when electric backup heat may run, and both models have it. ecobee’s threshold settings let you set the outdoor temperatures above which auxiliary heat is locked out and below which the compressor stops. The only difference is the number of aux stages each supports. More in best thermostat for a heat pump and aux heat running too much.
Essential vs Enhanced
| Essential | Enhanced | |

| List price | $139.99 | $199.99 |
| Display | Full-colour touchscreen | 50% larger glass lens, hi-res display |

| Trim kit | Sold separately ($14.99) | Included |
| Works with SmartSensors | ✓ | ✓ |
| Warranty | 3 years | 3 years |
Sources: ecobee’s Essential and Enhanced product pages, November 1, 2026. The Essential is not compatible with ecobee’s first-generation Room Sensor.
The Essential is ecobee’s lowest-cost model at $139.99 with a 3-year warranty, and it works with SmartSensors. The catch is power: it needs a C wire or the separately sold Power Extender Kit, which the Enhanced and Premium include. If your wiring has no C wire, the $60 gap to the Enhanced narrows to about $35 once you add the $24.99 kit. For homes without one, see best smart thermostat without a C-wire; for even lower prices, the best under $100.

Not for heating and cooling. ecobee’s paid Smart Security plans are optional; scheduling, away modes and the app work without them. On savings, the models differ less than the prices suggest: ENERGY STAR puts the average for certified smart thermostats at approximately 8% of heating and cooling bills or $50 per year, and that comes from schedules and away modes, which all three have.
