Best Smart Thermostat Without a C-Wire

The Short Answer

Most smart thermostats need continuous 24 V power, which older homes often do not have because the wiring has no C (common) wire. You have two ways round it: buy a thermostat designed to run without one, or buy one that ships with an adapter that creates one.

First, Check: Do You Really Not Have One?

Take the thermostat off the wall with the power off. If there is a wire on a terminal marked C, you have one. If not, look in the wall opening: a coiled, unused conductor (often blue or black) tucked behind the old thermostat can be connected as a C wire at both ends. That is free and beats any adapter.

1. Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen): Best Overall

Google says the 4th gen is designed to work whether or not your home has a C wire, and that only in limited cases (under 1%) does it need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector. It has a rechargeable battery that it tops up from the heating and cooling wires. The Amazon listing below includes a Nest Temperature Sensor for a second room.

The catch: power-sharing has limits. Google lists “Delayed” messages, shorter battery life and Wi-Fi drops as signs a Nest is short of power, and notes that some systems, including heat pumps, require a C wire or a compatible power accessory.

The cheaper Nest is also designed to work if your home doesn’t have a C wire, with two AAA batteries as backup. Google’s exceptions are heat-only or cool-only systems and zone controllers, which need a C wire.

The ecobee needs 24 V power, but the Premium ships with the Power Extender Kit, which installs at the furnace and lets the thermostat run over your existing wires. That makes it the most dependable no-C-wire option for a heat pump, where the Nest and Sensi both need a C wire or accessory anyway.
