Ecobee vs Nest: Which Smart Thermostat Should You Buy in 2026?

On savings, it is a tie. Both are ENERGY STAR certified, and ENERGY STAR puts the average for certified smart thermostats at about 8% of heating and cooling bills, around $50 a year. Neither manufacturer publishes an independent figure that separates them, so choose on features.

Where the ecobee Premium Wins
- Heat pump control you can see. ecobee exposes numeric outdoor-temperature thresholds for both auxiliary heat and the compressor (listed in BPA’s thermostat support sheets). On a heat pump with electric strips, that is the setting that matters most. See best thermostat for a heat pump.
- Voice without an Echo. Alexa or Siri is built in, so the thermostat itself can take voice commands.
- Air quality readings. ecobee says the Premium tracks VOCs and estimated CO2 alongside humidity. It is an indicator, not a lab-grade CO2 meter.

- It schedules itself. Google’s Smart Schedule learns the temperatures you like, so you never have to program it.
- No C wire, usually no problem. Google says it is designed to work with or without a C wire; in under 1% of homes it needs a C wire or the Nest Power Connector.
- Matter. It is Matter-certified, so it works beyond the Google Home app.
- Simple aux heat control. Heat Pump Balance picks the lockout for you; Google notes aux heat can cost about 2 to 5 times as much to run as the heat pump. Change it from the default Max Comfort if saving matters more than speed.

What it drops: no room sensor in the box (it works with SmartSensors sold separately), no built-in Alexa or Siri, no air quality sensor, and heat pump support of 2 heat / 2 cool with one stage of aux heat instead of two.

ecobee’s threshold settings let you say exactly when backup heat may run; in automatic mode, Aux Savings Optimization lets you lean toward savings or comfort. Google’s Heat Pump Balance makes the same trade-off with three presets. If you know your heat pump’s balance point and want to set it directly, ecobee is easier. If you would rather pick a preset and forget it, Nest is fine; just do not leave it on Max Comfort if saving matters. - Apple Home: ecobee lists Apple HomeKit as a works-with integration on the Premium, Enhanced and Essential, and the Premium can have Siri built in. The Nest Learning (4th gen) works with Google Home and other Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants, which is how it reaches Apple Home.

- Google: Nest is set up and controlled in the Google Home app. ecobee lists Google Assistant as a works-with integration.
- Matter: Google lists the Nest Learning (4th gen) as working with Matter. ecobee’s spec pages list HomeKit, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings, not Matter.
Electric Baseboard Heat? Neither One
Both brands are built for 24-volt central systems. ecobee says high-voltage systems like electric baseboard heaters are not compatible, and Google says the same of high voltage systems, usually electric baseboard heating. Both mention a professionally installed step-down transformer as a possible workaround, but most baseboard owners are better served by a line-voltage smart thermostat.

If you want room sensors, compare the total: the Nest Learning (4th gen) and ecobee Premium each include one, the Enhanced does not.
Subscriptions: Do You Need One?
Not for heating and cooling. Neither brand charges a subscription for scheduling, away modes or the app.
- Nest: Google describes Nest Renew as a free service that works with your Nest thermostat to shift energy use to cleaner or cheaper times. Google Home Premium is a camera and smart-home plan, not a thermostat requirement.
- ecobee: ecobee’s Smart Security plans are optional: Core is free with security devices, Plus is $5 monthly ($50 yearly) and Advanced $10 monthly ($100 yearly), per ecobee’s plans page. Plus and Advanced add “enhanced energy savings” through faster Home/Away switching, but the thermostat works fully without them.
How Long Will It Be Supported?
A smart thermostat that loses its app is a plain thermostat. Both brands have retired old models:
- Google ended app support for the first two Nest Learning generations: your thermostat will no longer connect to or work in the Google Nest app or Google Home app starting on October 25, 2025. Google also said we’ll no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe; US sales continue.
- Google’s update promise: Nest devices get automatic security updates for at least 5 years from US launch. For the Learning (4th gen) that minimum runs to August 20, 2029; for the Nest Thermostat (2020) it ran to October 30, 2025, so its window is already past.
- ecobee gives a 3-year limited warranty but, as far as we could find, publishes no minimum software-support period. It ended online connectivity for its original, pre-ecobee3 thermostats on July 31, 2024.
What this means: if you buy Nest today, the Learning (4th gen) has the clearer support runway. Among ecobee models, any current one is far newer than the units it has retired.
