What Does “Eco” Mean on a Nest Thermostat?

The Short Answer

Eco means your Nest has switched from its normal schedule to Eco Temperatures: a wider, energy-saving range where it heats and cools less. Google says Eco is active when “Eco” appears on your thermostat and in the app.

It turns on in one of two ways: you (or someone in your home) selected it, or the thermostat decided nobody was home and switched to Eco automatically. If you are home and it is too cold or warm, it is the second one.

Eco vs the Green Leaf

They are different things. The Nest Leaf appears when you pick an energy-efficient temperature — it is a nudge, and it does not change how the thermostat behaves. Eco is a mode that replaces your schedule until it ends.

Why It Switched to Eco When You Were Home

With “Eco when away” turned on, the Nest uses Home/Away Assist to guess whether anyone is home, using its own sensor and the phones in your household. It goes wrong in predictable ways:

• Nobody walked past the thermostat for a while, and the phone that would have said “home” has location permission off or is not in the household.
• The thermostat is in a hallway or room you rarely pass.
• Someone in the house does not have the app, so their presence does not count.

The fix is to add everyone’s phone to the household with location allowed, or turn off automatic Eco if the guessing does not suit your home.

How to Change Eco Temperatures

1. Open the Google Home app and select your thermostat.
2. Go to Settings → Temperature presets → Eco.
3. Use the plus and minus buttons to set the heating and cooling Eco Temperatures.

Google lists heating Eco Temperatures in the 40–70°F range and cooling in the 76–90°F range. The further they are from your normal settings, the more Eco saves, and the longer the house takes to recover when you come back.

How to Turn Eco Off

• Right now: select your normal mode (Heat, Cool or Heat·Cool) on the thermostat or in the app. That ends Eco and returns to your schedule.
• For good: turn off the automatic “Eco when away” setting in the app, so only you can start Eco.

You can also set an Eco Temperature to Off. Google’s note: the thermostat then will not heat while in Eco unless the house reaches your Safety Temperature, the floor that protects against frozen pipes.

Why Alexa Stopped Working

If you use the Google Nest skill for Alexa, Google says Alexa cannot control your Nest thermostat while it is in Eco, Off, Emergency Heat or Emergency Shutoff. Take it out of Eco and Alexa works again.

Is Eco Worth Leaving On?

Yes, if your household is out on a regular basis: heating or cooling an empty house is where smart thermostat savings come from. ENERGY STAR puts the average saving from a certified smart thermostat at about 8% of heating and cooling bills. If the automatic switching keeps getting it wrong, a fixed schedule with a setback at night and during working hours does most of the same job.
