ecobee Screen Black or Blank? Asleep or No Power, and How to Tell
The Short Answer
Walk up to the thermostat and tap the screen. If it wakes, nothing is wrong: the display is set to go dark when nobody is using it. If it stays black when you touch it, the thermostat has no power, and the cause is almost always outside the thermostat.
| What happens | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wakes when touched, dark otherwise | Standby screen brightness is off, or the screen sleeps during Sleep | Preferences (below) |
| Dark at night only | “Screen sleeps when in Sleep” is on | Preferences |
| Goes dark, then comes back on its own | Power drops during a heating or cooling cycle | Sections 2 and 3 |
| Never wakes | No power from the HVAC system | Section 2 |
| Shows “Calibrating” after coming back | Power was lost and restored | ecobee calibrating or rebooting |
1. It Wakes When Touched: Screen Settings
These are all in ecobee’s Preferences: Main Menu → General → Preferences (on the Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential, Main Menu → Preferences).
- Standby Screen Brightness. ecobee says you can disable the standby screen entirely by selecting off. If someone did, the screen is black whenever it is not in use. Raise it to keep the time and temperature visible.
- Screen sleeps when in Sleep Comfort Setting/Mode. With this ticked, the screen also turns off during Sleep. Untick it if the dark screen at night bothers you.
- Active to Standby Screen Timer. How long after you touch it the screen drops to standby.
- Active Screen Brightness. If the screen looks very dim even when awake.
None of these affect heating or cooling.
2. It Will Not Wake: Find the Lost Power
An ecobee runs on 24 V from the furnace or air handler, so a dead screen usually means the equipment has lost power or switched itself off. Check, in this order:
- The furnace or air handler breaker. ecobee’s first step is to check the furnace breaker at the main panel and switch it back on if tripped. If it trips again, leave it off and call a technician.
- An overheated electric furnace. ecobee explains that when an electric furnace overheats, its safety controls generally shut off power to the furnace, and since the ecobee is powered by the furnace, it will turn off also. It comes back once the furnace has cooled. Common causes are a clogged filter or a blocked air intake. On gas or propane furnaces, the thermostat usually keeps its power during an overheat, so a blank screen points elsewhere.
- The service switch and the furnace door. Many furnaces have a light-style switch nearby and a door safety switch inside the panel. Check the switch is on and the door is fully closed.
- A loose wire. Pull the thermostat gently off its base and tug each wire, as ecobee suggests for heating problems. Reseat any that come loose.
Still nothing? Our smart thermostat black screen checklist covers the rest, including the control-board fuse and condensate float switches.
3. It Goes Dark Now and Then
A screen that blacks out and comes back, often with a “Calibrating” message, means the power is dropping during operation. ecobee’s rebooting guide says the job is to find what is cutting the power. The usual culprits are a furnace overheating during heating, a condensate float switch tripping during cooling, an undersized transformer on boiler and zone-valve systems, or an install without a proper C wire. The step-by-step is in ecobee calibrating or rebooting.
Do Not Reach for Reset All
A factory reset will not fix a black screen, and it can create a new problem. ecobee says that for heating, cooling or connectivity issues a Reset All will not resolve this in most cases, and that Reset All erases the heating and cooling settings, which may need a technician to put back. Fix the power first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my ecobee screen black?
If it lights up when you touch it, the standby screen is set to off or the screen sleeps during Sleep; change it in Preferences. If it will not wake, the thermostat has lost power: check the furnace breaker, the service switch and the furnace door, and let an overheated electric furnace cool down.
How do I keep my ecobee screen on?
In Main Menu, General, Preferences, raise Standby Screen Brightness above off and untick Screen sleeps when in Sleep.
Why does my ecobee turn off and on by itself?
The power is dropping. Common causes are the equipment cutting power during a cycle (an overheating furnace, a condensate float switch), an undersized transformer, or a missing C wire.
Should I factory reset my ecobee if the screen is blank?
No. A blank screen is a power problem. ecobee says Reset All does not fix most heating, cooling or connection problems, and it erases your equipment settings.
